Team News: Greenspeed Karting - ECKC Goodwood Report

GreenSpeed Karting recently kicked off the 2010 Canadian karting season, sending 7 entries to the grid in the opening round of the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship at Goodwood Kartways in Stoufville, Ontario earlier this month. While much has already been written about this wild weather weekend, the team fought through some challenges and found plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the season ahead.

In Rotax Junior, the trio of Milwain, Livingston and Morrison all emerged from the weekend inside the top 10 in the points standings highlighted by Milwain’s Sunday podium finish. While Milwain struggled early in Friday and Saturday sessions on a limping motor that eventually let go – an engine change immediately put Milwain right in the thick of things and he didn’t put a wheel wrong en route to a strong 2nd place Sunday finish.

"The versatility of our chassis in both wet and dry conditions is what allowed all three of our junior drivers to finish well inside the Top 10 in points for the combined two race weekend event," notes team owner Mike Morrison. Similar consistency was shown by Eric Gerrits in DD2 where Gerrits delivered two solid finishes in wet and dry conditions and emerged from the weekend 4th overall in points in the massive DD2 field.

"We definitely had some good results, and there’s no question that some of the weekend’s misadventures kept us from delivering even stronger overall points tallies," commented Morrison. "On Saturday Milwain blew an engine in qualifying, and a few drivers including White and Livingston were collected in some opening lap pile ups. Morrison was also taken out in corner one of the Sunday pre-final by some over anxious drivers in the back half of the filed." Other drivers just couldn't get a break all weekend. White continued to struggle with just plain bad luck and at times was very fast, but struggled with a variety of issues that kept knocking him backward as he tried to march forward. Running in 3rd in DD2 action Sunday, White had to retire early when his DD2 became a DD1 and refused to shift.

In senior Action, Andy Jaffray had a great weekend considering he has not been in a kart for several years. Andy hung around the top ten mark all weekend long in a very deep field of talent. As Andy admittedly is still getting rid of the rust, we absolutely expect he will continue to be a strong contender in this class all season long.

"I'm very happy with our weekend overall," noted Morrison, "especially when we know exactly what kept us from delivering even stronger results. It was a mixed bag of victories and defeats...but that's why championships aren’t decided in one weekend. We know we will be there in the end. In fact, we have our weekend with lady luck already scheduled," laughs Morrison.

The team is anxious to get back on track this weekend as they visit Kawartha Speedway for the opening round of the BSRKC Championship May 23rd and 24th, before heading back to a favourite GreenSpeed track and the second round of the ECKC series at Mosport where the team is looking forward to grabbing back the points that slipped away in round one.
